‘寫真” is a Japanese term for photos. Consequently, “寫真帖” refers to a photo collection that can bring a whole new level of visual experiences to the audience which differs from that derived from other artistic forms such as paintings and sketches. Captured images can diminish the abstract difference between time and space because viewers are able to live vicariously through those people shown in the images. Some photo collections contain background information and explanation, while others include maps and statistical charts. The additional detailed information added to the photo collections truly serves as a valuable reference. Thus, other forms of historical materials cannot replace photo collections. During the Japanese Colonial Period, most publishers in Taiwan belonged to government offices or private photo shops; moreover, most photographers were Japanese.
The contents of these photo collections range from military politics, and human activities, to natural scenery captured realistically by the camera lens. These captured scenes are shared for various reasons, such as academic research, promotion activities, commemoration, war records, recording the scenery, displaying construction achievements, etc. “Using the Shutter to Record Taiwan History- the Japanese Colonial Period Photo Collection Exhibition” includes Japanese troops entry into Taiwan, Japan royalty in Taiwan, Taiwanese aborigines’ resistance, exhibition activities, famous sites, infrastructure construction, natural disasters, geology, botany, etc., altogether 16 categories, in hopes of guiding the viewers through the Japanese Colonial Period. Through the photos, everyone can gain a better understanding of Taiwanese society during the Japanese Colonial Period.
