The “National Taiwan Library ” inherited literature resources from the Library of the Government of Formosa and pre-war southern investigation materials from the Southern Materials Library, which were integrated into this special collection. Taiwan has rich mountain landscapes with over 200 mountains exceeding 3,000 meters, inspiring both awe and fascination. During early Qing rule, Taiwan implemented mountain restriction policies. As migration and land cultivation expanded, knowledge of the mountains increased. Additionally, Western foreigners conducted investigations in mountainous areas, leaving behind numerous records. In the late Qing period, the “Opening the Mountains and Pacifying the Aborigines” policy further expanded understanding of Taiwan’s mountains. During the Japanese colonial period, new technologies were used for mountain surveys and forest investigations. After the 1930s, road development, mountain railway construction, and national park establishment initiated a mountain climbing boom among the general public.
